The drayage advantage

The critical link between modes.

Short distance does not mean simple. Good drayage services coordinate terminals, equipment, releases, deadlines, and receivers as one connected plan.

On-time performance

Coordinate terminal availability, appointments, and delivery windows before the clock starts working against you.

Flexible capacity

Match containers and local moves with vetted drayage carriers and the equipment your shipment requires.

Connected planning

Link port or rail pickup, transload, storage, and onward delivery in one practical movement plan.

Shipment visibility

Keep key milestones and status updates visible from release through empty return or final delivery.

Drayage & transload

One plan from terminal to destination.

Choose the services your container and cargo need, from local terminal pickup to inland distribution.

Start shipping now

Container drayage

Import and export container pickup and delivery between marine terminals, depots, warehouses, and customer facilities.

Rail drayage

Efficient first- and last-mile transportation to and from intermodal rail ramps and inland container yards.

Transload services

Transfer freight between ocean containers, dry vans, flatbeds, and other equipment to fit the next leg of the journey.

Cross-docking

Move freight directly from inbound to outbound equipment to reduce storage time and keep orders flowing.

Port transportation

Coordinate local moves among marine terminals, container yards, warehouses, and nearby distribution centres.

Storage & distribution

Hold freight when timing does not align, then palletize, sort, or release it for regional and final-mile delivery.

How it works

Plan the move in four steps.

The earlier the details line up, the easier it is to protect terminal free time and receiving appointments.

  1. 01

    Share the shipment

Send the container number, size, terminal or rail ramp, release status, destination, and delivery requirements.

  2. 02

    Plan the pickup

We align availability, appointments, equipment, driver capacity, free time, and the receiving window.

  3. 03

    Dray or transload

Move the container intact or transfer the cargo into the equipment best suited for the next leg.

  4. 04

    Deliver and close out

Complete delivery, return the empty container when required, and keep shipment records together.

Built around the cargo

Use drayage alone—or connect the next move.

Not every container should follow the same path. Deliver it intact, transfer it into domestic equipment, split it across destinations, or hold it until the receiver is ready.

  • Direct container delivery

Move a released import container from the terminal or rail ramp directly to a consignee with dock capacity.

  • Container-to-trailer transload

Convert ocean freight into domestic truckload or LTL equipment for more flexible inland distribution.

  • Multi-destination distribution

Break down a container, sort the cargo, and route pallets or orders to several facilities or customers.

  • Short-term storage

Bridge timing gaps when the container is available before a warehouse or final receiver can accept the freight.

FAQ

Drayage services questions.

Practical answers about container drayage, transloading, terminal deadlines, pricing details, and planning.

What are drayage services?

Drayage services are short-distance freight moves that connect a port, rail yard, or container depot with a warehouse, distribution centre, or another transportation mode. Although the distance is often local, drayage requires precise coordination around container releases, terminal appointments, equipment, delivery windows, and empty-container return deadlines.

What is the difference between drayage and transload?

Drayage moves the container itself on a chassis between locations. Transloading removes the cargo from one piece of equipment and loads it into another, such as moving cartons or pallets from an ocean container into a domestic dry van. A shipment may use drayage only, or drayage followed by transload and inland delivery.

What information is needed for a drayage quote?

Provide the terminal or rail ramp, pickup number or container number, container size and type, cargo weight, release status, destination, ready date, receiving hours, and any special handling needs. Import moves should also include the last free day when available; export moves should include cut-off dates and booking details.

What are demurrage, detention, and storage charges?

These are time-related charges that can apply when containers or equipment remain at a terminal, customer site, or outside the carrier's allowed free time. The exact definition and rate depend on the terminal, steamship line, rail operator, and equipment provider. Sharing availability and deadline information early helps the team plan around avoidable charges.

Can you handle both port and rail drayage?

Yes. UUCargo coordinates drayage moves to and from marine terminals, intermodal rail ramps, container depots, warehouses, and customer facilities, subject to lane, equipment, terminal access, and carrier availability.

Can freight be palletized during transload?

Yes, when the facility and cargo are suitable. Transload services can include unloading, palletizing, shrink-wrapping, sorting, relabelling, and loading into outbound equipment. Confirm the requested work, carton count, dimensions, weight, and any pallet specifications when requesting a quote.

Do you offer cross-docking and temporary storage?

Cross-docking and short-term storage can be coordinated when the receiving facility, cargo type, and local capacity allow. These services are useful when inbound and outbound schedules do not align or when a container must be unloaded before free time expires.

How far in advance should I book drayage services?

Book as soon as the vessel or rail schedule and container details are available. Advance notice is especially important during peak periods, for overweight loads, special equipment, strict appointments, or terminals with limited reservation availability.
